There Was a Great Woman

From Our Pastor's Desk

2 Kings 4:8  And it fell on a day, that Elisha passed to Shunem, where was a great woman; and she constrained him to eat bread.

And so it was, that as oft as he passed by, he turned in thither to eat bread. So many great women in the Bible – Esther, Deborah, Anna etc (and they have things in common) but the Bible specifically wrote this woman as great, WHY? Webster describes Greatness as unusually, considerably or comparatively large in size, dimensions, degree, power, intensity, etc.

Greatness means wonderful, first rate, or very good. Greatness may also mean immense, enormous gigantic, huge, vast, grand. A great person can be referred to as a champion, notable, remarkable, exceptionally outstanding, a famous, distinguished etc.

He must have been a person who has achieved importance or a distinction in a field. Greatness is not measured by size or volume of possession. Jesus said in Luke 12:15 –“And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth”

He then told a parable, concluding with v23 that “The life is more than meat, and the body is more than raiment” This shows us great-ness means having a large heart, generous and accommodating. A heart that is ever willing to give, has a giving habit.

Greatness makes others great. Jesus was a great man not by His material possession but by His material distribution, He gave until there was no more material thing to give, then He gave His life.

A truly great man or woman’s size reflects in other people’s lives. Such was the great woman in Shunem, in the order of Shobi, Machir & Barzillai. May our lives be recorded as great, according to Biblical definition, in Jesus Name.

You will have good success this 2023.

Remain blessed.

Shalom.
